KIEV THEATRES

Kiev is famous for its theatres: the Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama; the Opera and Ballet House.

Due to the high quality and professionalism of its actors, the Ivan Franko Theatre is the most popular in Kiev . Here you’ll find Ukrainian, classical, and contemporary dramas, but only in Ukrainian.

The theatre was built in 1898, and the theatre troop, named after the famous Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko , has been performing since 1926. The repertoire consists of classical, dramatic and musical performances. Performances are in Ukrainian.

Kiev Opera and Ballet Theater

The Taras Shevchenko National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet is regarded as third oldest musical theatres in all Ukraine.(after Odessa and Lviv). Just in 1994 - sixty years after the last modification - “Ukrainian” was replaced by the word “National”.

The original theatre was founded in 1867 and designed by the great architect I. Shtrom. However some years later in 1896 it was regrettably burnt. Nevertheless it was due to the gifted architect Victor Shreter that the splendid Neo-Renaissance styled building came into existence as we know it today.

Kiev is proud of its museums: the Museum of History , T.G. Shevchenko Museum, the Museum of Ukrainian Art, the Museum of Russian Art, the Lesya Ukrainka Literary Memorial Museum, the Museum of Western and Eastern Art.

Pirohiv (Pirogovo) in Kiev

Pirohiv, or Pirogovo, is a Ukrainian village that contains authentic examples of Ukrainian folk architecture. This outdoor museum reproduces Ukrainian village existence and illustrates Ukraine's agricultural heritage, folk culture, and rural life.

The museum was founded in the late 1960s and features a unique collection of folk architecture from all regions of Ukraine. In summer and fall the museum hosts special craft festivals. The visitors are also welcome to visit folk crafts shops and a traditional restaurant serving Ukrainian cuisine.
